I have decided to become a radio personality when I grow up. And I decided to grow up starting this Thursday at 7 p.m. on 1230 AM in Las Vegas. What happens in Vegas no longer stays there, because we’ll be talking about it on our show.
The weekly hour-long show will be co-hosted with Frank Kneeland, author of The Secret World of Video Poker Progressives in addition to being a wit and raconteur. The title of the show will be “Gambling With An Edge.” Frank wanted, “Vegas: The Good, The Bad, and The Surgically Enhanced”. I won!
You can listen live if you’re in the Vegas area, or if you’re anywhere near the Internet you can listen live on www.klav1230am.com by clicking on the button in the upper left-hand corner that says (Surprise! Surprise!) “Click Here”. We will be taking listener questions and giving away weekly prizes on-air as an incentive to listen live. If you miss the live show, you can still catch everything but the giveaways in an MP3 version, which will appear on both www.bobdancer.com and www.progressivevp.com We expect to describe in a paragraph or two who our guests were and what subjects were discussed.
I suppose the show will morph somewhat over time, but here is what we intend at the outset:
a Weekly interviews with respected gambling authors.
b A discussion of various promotions in Vegas and elsewhere where we believe the player can obtain the advantage.
c Frequent discussions on various “general principles of gaming.”
d Answer questions provided by listeners.
e Frank is begging me to allow occasional “Special Shows” on the other sides of Vegas.
1 Things to do when you’re not in a casino.
2 What happens to buffet waste.
3 Coming to Vegas stories, successes and failures.
4 Etc…
Both Frank’s and my backgrounds are in video poker. Earlier I was a blackjack player, a backgammon player, and a coupon hustler. We both look for an edge with slot clubs, promotions, mailers, etc. You can bet we’ll be talking about these things.
Neither of us are poker players or sports bettors — except in special circumstances. There are a number of places to obtain information on these subjects. We will sometimes interview authors who write about these subjects, but we won’t be personally offering advice on these games. (You’ll have to figure out who is going to win the Super Bowl this Sunday all by yourself. Neither Frank nor I have a clue.) I believe Frank said he was going to bet on “The Mets.”
We are hoping listeners write in suggestions for subjects for us to talk about. Our email for the show will be [email protected]. To be sure, it is far easier for folks to ask certain questions than it is for us to actually answer them (Example: What are all the good plays in Las Vegas for this coming weekend? Answer: Well, it depends . . .). We will need to pick and choose which questions to answer, but we will pick several of them each week.
I’ll be reminding listeners of whatever class I’ll be teaching the following Tuesday at the South Point (next semester begins February 15. Schedule available now on www.bobdancer.com). When I’m making other appearances, I’ll be mentioning that too. Frank is promoting his book and he’ll be announcing his appearances as well.
I don’t know how to say this gently, but Frank is not quite right. Although he may be the smartest man I know, his mind free associates and there is no telling which direction it will go next. Part of my job is to keep him on topic. I suspect I’ll be less successful some weeks than others. You will end up learning something, and while it is happening, it should be entertaining radio.
As a teaser for our first broadcast, consider this. As many of you know, my wife Shirley has a lung problem and cannot go into casinos. There is one place, however, where she regularly plays video poker (with my coaching, of course.) One of our sponsors will offer a totally smoke-free environment where you can play a positive game for stakes between $1 and $50. We’ll talk about it during our first show. Also guesting on our first show will be Michael Shackleford, the Wizard of Odds, and Greg Brown from videopoker.com.
Have a listen and let us know what you think.
